Bringing People, Music, & Culture together through the game of Chess.
The Atlanta Checkmate Club is a modern speakeasy with Atlanta at its core, bringing People, Music, and Culture together through the game of Chess.
Original speakeasies were secret gatherings, created for community and connection while rebelling against prohibition. They became less about alcohol and more about the diverse people they brought together. Speakeasies unknowingly shaped the landscape of nightlife forever.
The Checkmate Club started in 2021 with that same mission, and has built a genuine, inclusive community that changed Atlanta forever. Since then, the ACC has curated space for hundreds of people to gather every single week, at different venues throughout the city. No one does a chess club like Atlanta. Join us for the good vibes, good people, and good chess.
The people are the best part of the Checkmate Club! It's a completely diverse group of men and women, from all walks of life, and all different skill levels. Some people come for the vibes, some come to win the chess tournaments. We all leave having a great time connecting with amazing people.
We share the weekly schedule on our events page and on socials every Sunday for the week ahead, but typically we have Mon-Wed-Fri nights locked in. We're at different spots all through out Atlanta. More nights and more cities coming soon!
All skill levels are welcome! Some of our best players showed up and actually learned how to play at the Checkmate Club. We have casual play and different skill tournaments available.
All of our public chess nights are free to join! Parking is usually free/street to $5 max. There are no minimums on food and drinks.
Nope! Chess sets and clocks are provided, but you're always welcome to bring your own!
Meet Seth, the founder of the Atlanta Checkmate Club. He fell in love with chess after binging The Queen’s Gambit in 2020. As soon as the world reopened, Seth brought his own board to local bars and played with three of his homies.
As random strangers started asking to play, he realized people wanted community & connection more than ever, and chess was the perfect excuse to bring them together.
Seth combined his years in nightlife, his love for the game, and his local connections to create Atlanta’s Social Chess Club. He now has hundreds of people joining weekly, and he's proud of the community he's built. There’s a lot more coming for the Checkmate Club, and you're invited!
